Proclaiming God’s Word in Season and out of Season!
Scripture is the living Word of God. This Word took flesh in the person of Jesus Christ. Lectors of St Rose of Lima Parish proclaim the Word of God so that it will continue to take flesh before the Assembly at each and every Mass. Lectors approach this through a loving knowledge of Scripture, prayer for enlightenment and understanding and submission to God’s graces to proclaim His Word so as to be understood and to enhance the spiritual growth of the Parish.
The role of the lector is to proclaim the word of God at Mass in the Scripture readings that precede the Gospel reading. The lector may also read the General Intercessions (in the absence of a Deacon) as well as the Missal antiphons.
By the physical action of proclaiming lectors are the instrument through whom Christ becomes present to the assembly in His word and through whom He imparts His Teachings.
Lectors proclaim at Sunday liturgies, Masses for Holy Days of Obligation and other special occasions as well as at funeral Masses and weddings and at the daily Noon Mass.
Training is typically held twice a year following the Ministry Fair weekends or by appointment, when needed.
Schedules are prepared for a three month period for the Sunday liturgies. The schedule is emailed to all lectors and is also published on the parish website. Lectors for all other Masses are solicited as the need arises by email or phone call.
Lector Requirements
1. An understanding of the Celebration of the Mass and the Liturgy of the Word.
2. Role model to the faithful, one who leads by reverence and devotion.
3. A registered parishioner of St Rose of Lima.
4. A practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church, who has received the
Sacrament of Confirmation and if married, is married in accordance with Church
Law.
5. Completion of the 3 parts of the Virtus training as well as a criminal background
check are required of all volunteers
6. While a lector may be an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Communion he or she
must NOT serve in both capacities at the same Mass.
